It’s been a really, really long time since I’ve cosplayed anyone. Like, not since a Texas convention circa 2005. So, yeah, eleven years, it’s been. That lag in time is not at all because I didn’t enjoy the experience. Rather, it was much more to do with being in college and eventually not having any real time to gather materials for a costume and solicit assistance with making it. But the fun I had at the conventions always had me swearing that I’d love to get back to it again, even if on the most infrequent basis. Currently, working full time and being in graduate school part time, as well as working ever so slowly on a novel have all sapped up almost every second of my “free time”. Mmm, scare quotes.
However, given that I plan to attend Magic City Con in June, I’ve decided to jump into the fray once again. In this case, the cosplay isn’t entirely new, as I wore the costume at one of the aforementioned cons of the past. But it’s one that I’ll need to refurbish, carefully repairing rips and remaking components that have long since become lost to time or the black hole that accompanies moving multiple times in a few years.

As much as I would adore doing a Fallout-themed cosplay (and will likely feel a teensy bit insecure for NOT doing a Fallout thang), I don’t really have the time necessary to get something of quality ready for this convention. Still, I’m thrilled to be bringing General Beatrix (Final Fantasy IX) to life again. She’s one of my most beloved Final Fantasy characters. And given IX’s recent porting to Steam and smartphones, I figure it’s an excellent time to celebrate that with a cosplay. Hell, I may even attempt a replay of the game when I’m out of school for the summer. Maybe.
In any case, I’m using this post as an official Memorandum of Understanding to myself, a way to keep myself accountable. Sorta. I have to establish a plan for prop and armor building, as well as some clothing add-ons. It’s going to be a hefty undertaking, even with the biggest piece of the outfit already done. I’ve got a sword, Save the Queen, to construct, as well as armor pieces. I’m not overly well-versed in materials construction, but I made some magic with clay and paint in the past. I’ll be utilizing those, and other items for this endeavor. I want it to be as awesome as it can be. And I’m putting myself officially on notice. Periodic progress posts to follow!
